Dear Madison Parents and Families,

On behalf of the Madison Elementary School District Governing Board and administration, I wish to begin by thanking all who were able to participate in our virtual Madison Parent and Family Town Hall on June 10. When we engage our community, we learn from you and this helps us to meet the needs of every child.

The plan to open Madison schools is being finalized and will be presented to the Board on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 for their approval. As such, you are invited to our next virtual Madison Parent and Family Town Hall on Monday, June 29, 2020, 6:00 PM on Livestream. This will give you the opportunity to view and comment on our plan to open Madison schools safely.

Our plan is being developed with guidance from the CDC but also with guidance from Madison parents who are practicing medical physicians. These “Dr. Parents” not only understand the science behind COVID-19, but also understand the challenges parents of school-aged children are facing when deciding whether or not to send their children to school in August. Four of our Dr. Parents had a discussion with our Governing Board last week. If you have not already, I urge you to listen to this meeting: https://livestream.com/accounts/10632146/events/9178785

Madison ESD will continue to strive to provide you with honest and transparent information as, together, we face today’s challenges. I continue to appreciate all that you do to support Madison schools and our community. I look forward to our June 29th Town Hall.

Respectfully,

Kenneth R. Baca, Ed.D.
Superintendent

6/11/2020 – Virtual Town Hall Follow-Up

Madison Parents and Families,

I wish to thank all who were able to participate in yesterday’s Parent and Family Town Hall. For those who were not able to join us last night, you can view last night’s event online or view the PowerPoint presentation.

Being able to freely express yourself in a respectful manner reveals much about your character and your dedication to living one of Madison’s values: “We build trusting relationships through understanding and caring for others: By interacting with others in a respectful and dignified manner.” It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable and it is possible to express ourselves virtually in a manner that is consistent with this value.

Please know that the Governing Board and I are listening to you. Based on last night’s meeting, the biggest issue before us is whether or not to mandate the use of some type of protective covering. That decision will be made with the understanding that our primary responsibility is to the safety and wellbeing of our students and employees.

This morning, I have asked principals to invite parents on to their School Opening Task Force. I know that there will be an overwhelming number of you who will want to volunteer. I ask that you understand the need to limit the number and to trust your site leadership to invite those who will represent you as best they can. We will hold another Town Hall before June 30 to update you on our plan.

Practices and procedures will look different than what we have become accustomed to in the past. With the rising number of COVID-19 cases occurring in Maricopa County, we all must do our part to keep our children, and those who teach and care for them, safe and healthy.

Thank you for being a wonderful community and for contributing to the success of Madison. I appreciate each of you.

Respectfully,
Kenneth R. Baca, Ed.D.

5/28/2020 – Virtual Town Hall

5/18/2020 Letter from the Superintendent (PDF) English | Spanish

Dear Madison Parents and Families,

As we continue to plan for the opening of school in August, the safety and well-being of your children is a top priority. It is not easy raising children in today’s world and schools need to be safe places for every child to thrive and learn.

The Madison Elementary School District is committed to behaving according to our stated values, specifically, “We commit to doing what is best for students as the driving force behind all decision making.” In order to ensure students succeed academically, socially and emotionally, we must provide safe and healthy environments. Thus, the decisions that Madison needs to make for schools to be open in August will be centered on what is best for the safety and health of every child balanced with the safety and health of staff.

As partners in education, you have the right to know how we are planning and what we are planning. I know that you have many questions that need answers. I cannot promise you that there will be an answer to every question. But I can promise you truth and transparency.

As such, I will be holding a virtual Madison Parent and Family Town Hall on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, 6:00 PM on Livestream. I will present the status of our plan to safely open school in August, share the challenges we are encountering and share the results of the parent survey. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions. Logistical information and reminders will be sent to you ahead of this June 10 meeting.

As always, I appreciate all that you do to support Madison schools and our community. I value you!

Sincerely,

Kenneth R. Baca, Ed.D.
